On September 16, 2026, OpenAI started testing an ad that does not go anywhere. Click it and you do not land on a website, you open a conversation with a brand's AI agent, inside ChatGPT, wearing ChatGPT's own interface.
Wayfair is the first name attached to the pilot. OpenAI calls the format Sponsored Agents. The company's CFO, Sarah Friar, had already told Goldman Sachs' Communacopia conference on September 8 that the ad units running today are "the basic starting point," a placeholder for something built around how people actually use an assistant rather than around how they scroll a feed or scan a search page. Eight days later, the placeholder got a successor.
What Actually Changed: The Ad Stopped Being a Door and Became a Salesperson
A banner ad's entire job ends the moment someone clicks it. A Sponsored Agent's job starts there. Once a ChatGPT user taps through, they are not reading copy, they are being asked questions, answering them, and being asked follow-ups, all inside a labelled but branded exchange that OpenAI, not the advertiser, hosts and renders.
That distinction sounds procedural. It is not. It moves the entire discipline of advertising from persuasion by exposure to persuasion by dialogue, and those two things do not run on the same psychological mechanism at all.
Why a Chat Converts Better Than a Banner Ever Could
A multi-turn conversation lets a brand collect small yeses before it asks for a big one, and decades of compliance research say that sequence works. The foot-in-the-door effect, first documented in social psychology and now studied directly in chatbot interactions, shows that people who agree to a minor request become measurably more likely to agree to a larger one afterward, purely to stay consistent with the self-image their first answer implied. A 2026 study in Nature's Humanities and Social Sciences Communications found that chatbot interactivity itself, the back and forth, deepens users' cognitive and emotional involvement and raises trust independent of what is actually being sold. Separate chatbot design research published this year found that warmth and human-like conversational cues, more than the accuracy of what is said, are what make an AI agent persuasive.
Put together, that is the entire business case for Sponsored Agents in one sentence: a conversation can extract four small commitments in ninety seconds that a banner could never ask for once. OpenAI is not selling brands a better click. It is selling them a compliance engine, priced like an ad unit.
Who Loses When the Sale Happens Off the Record
The advertiser loses the ability to audit its own salesperson. Every word the Sponsored Agent says about a Wayfair product, every claim, every comparison, every promise about delivery or returns, is generated and logged by OpenAI, on OpenAI's infrastructure, in a conversation the brand did not write and cannot read in real time. Wayfair says it is testing with guardrails on product accuracy, transparency and service handoffs, which is another way of saying the brand is trusting a system it does not operate to represent it correctly to a paying customer, over and over, at whatever scale the pilot expands to.
- The click-to-site model let a brand keep its own pixel, its own retargeting pool, and its own recorded page views.
- The click-to-chat model keeps all of that inside ChatGPT, where OpenAI decides what gets shared back.
- Analysts covering the pilot have already flagged the open question directly: does the retailer gain anything by keeping the customer inside the assistant, or does it simply hand over the data it used to own for free.
- Google, in the same week, shipped the opposite instinct: four new Chrome metrics called Ad Count, Ad Density and two Ad Weight scores, built so buyers can measure how much advertising clutters a page they do not control.
That contrast is the whole story of September 2026 in one week. One platform is building instruments to measure what is visible. Another is building a format with nothing to measure at all.
A conversation can extract four small commitments in ninety seconds that a banner could never ask for once.
This is not happening in a quiet corner of the market either. The IAB raised its 2026 US ad spend forecast to 12.3% growth this month, up nearly three points from its January projection, on the back of a stronger first half. Retailers are moving the same direction from a different angle: Albertsons spent the summer turning shopper data into branded entertainment with Procter & Gamble rather than just selling placement, the same logic of climbing from access to persuasion that OpenAI is now applying to chat. Money is flowing into exactly the kind of format nobody outside the platform can fully see inside.
What a Brand Actually Does With This Before the Next Pilot Call
Ask for transcript access in writing before agreeing to anything, not after. If a platform can generate a sales conversation in your brand's name, your legal and product teams need standing access to what was actually said, not a summary OpenAI chooses to surface after a complaint. Second, price the pilot against what it costs you in owned data, not against what it costs in media, because the real trade here is attribution for conversion, and conversion alone has never been the easy number to get. Sponsored Agents may well outperform a banner. The question worth asking before signing is who gets to keep the receipt.
