Stop Sending Ad Traffic to Your Homepage: How to Build a Landing Page That Converts

Litmus Universe3 min read

Your ad says "corporate website, delivered in 14 days". The person who clicks lands on your homepage and finds seven services, a slideshow and an "about us" section. They cannot find the promise they clicked for, so they leave. You paid for that click.

A landing page is built for a single ad or campaign and focused on a single action. Unlike a homepage, it speaks not to everyone but to one person arriving with one intent.

Message match: the first and most important rule

Whatever the ad promised, meet it on the first screen in the same words. If the ad says "free site visit", so should the headline. Visitors should know in a second that they came to the right place. In Google Ads this match is part of landing page experience and can affect what you pay.

A structure that works

  • Headline: one sentence repeating the ad's promise and stating the outcome.
  • Subheading: who it is for and how it works.
  • Main action: one button or short form visible on the first screen, labelled with what happens: "Book a free site visit", not "Submit".
  • Proof: client logos, concrete results, reviews, right below the headline.
  • How it works: the process in three or four steps, to reduce uncertainty.
  • Objections answered: price, timing and commitment handled in a short FAQ.
  • Repeat the action: the same action once more at the end.
A landing page's job is not to inform. It is to make one decision easy.

What to remove

  • The top menu: every link away from the page splits conversions. Keep the logo, drop the menu.
  • Multiple goals: newsletter, quote and catalogue download should not share a page.
  • Heavy images: especially on mobile, a slow page burns ad budget.

Testing without guessing

Do not change everything at once. Set up measurement first: form submissions and phone and WhatsApp taps recorded as conversions, with the ad source tracked through UTM parameters. Then test one variable. The biggest effects usually come from the headline, the offer itself and form length, rarely from button colour.

Without enough traffic for an A/B test, change things in sequence instead: two weeks on one version, two weeks on the other, same budget and targeting. It is not rigorous science, but it shows direction.

Small differences for Meta and Google

Someone from Google searched for something and has high intent; give them a fast, clear answer. Someone from Meta stopped while scrolling; they need a little more context, visuals and trust. Two pages for two channels selling the same product often pays off. For solid measurement on Meta, see our piece on the Conversions API.

Frequently asked questions

Should a landing page be long or short?

It depends on the size of the decision. A free guide or a short call needs only a short page. For a high-priced service or product, visitors need more proof, process detail and answers to objections, so a long page usually works better. What matters is that every section answers a question.

Do I need a separate page for every ad?

Not every ad, but every distinct promise and audience. If you sell the same service to two sectors or for two different needs, two pages usually perform better. Ads testing different visuals for the same promise can share a page.

Should landing pages be indexed?

Pages built for ads whose content overlaps other pages are often best set to noindex, avoiding duplicate content. But a strong page for a lasting service or product can also earn organic traffic, so keep that one indexable.

Reklam Trafiğini Ana Sayfaya Göndermeyi Bırakın: Dönüşüm Getiren Landing Page Nasıl Hazırlanır

Litmus Universe3 dk okuma

  • Üst menü: Ziyaretçiyi sayfadan uzaklaştıran her link, dönüşümü bölüştürür. Logoyu bırakın, menüyü kaldırın.
  • Birden fazla hedef: Hem bülten kaydı, hem teklif, hem katalog indirme aynı sayfada olmamalı.
  • Ağır görseller: Özellikle mobilde, yavaş açılan sayfa reklam bütçesini boşa harcar.

Tahmin yürütmeden test

Her şeyi aynı anda değiştirmeyin.
